Better Light, Simpler Control
Smart home lighting should make every room easier to use, not give you another app to manage. A well-planned system can replace rows of switches with intuitive keypads, create comfortable illumination for different activities and make everyday routines simpler for everyone in the household.
Since 1992, Total Home Technologies has worked with New Jersey homeowners, architects and builders to bring thoughtful technology into the residential environment. We design, program and support Lutron control systems, including HomeWorks, RadioRA 3 and Caséta, with Control4 and Savant integration where appropriate.
A finished house with established wiring requires a different approach from a new home still on the architect's plans. Some projects begin with a few rooms while others involve keypads and motorized shades throughout the property. The important decisions are made around the space and the people using it, before equipment is selected.

Make the Lighting You Already Have Work Better
A lighting system can become frustrating long before it needs replacing. LED fixtures flicker at low levels, keypad labels no longer match renovated rooms, schedules behave unpredictably or an older control system becomes difficult to manage after the original installer leaves. Total Home evaluates the dimmers, keypads, processors, fixtures and programming, including installations completed by other companies. We identify whether the problem involves compatibility, configuration or failed equipment before determining what can be restored and what needs to change.
Problems Worth a Call
✓ LED fixtures that flicker, buzz or won't dim smoothly
✓ Keypads controlling the wrong rooms or scenes
✓ Schedules that no longer follow your routine
✓ App access or programming that has stopped working
✓ Older systems with missing documentation or support
✓ Rooms that need upgrades without a complete renovation

Why Lighting Control Pays Off Every Day
A well-planned project should feel uncomplicated once you live with it. That means deciding where controls belong, how each space changes throughout the day, which LEDs can dim reliably and how the rest of the house should respond. Those choices work together, whether we're improving a few finished rooms or planning an entire new residence.

Less Wall Clutter
One engraved keypad replaces rows of switches with clearly labeled buttons, keeping walls uncluttered and making it easy for family and guests to choose the setting they need.

Evenings Made Easy
Lights can ease into the evening with a schedule that follows sunset. At night, one button can lower the levels across the house, so nobody has to make another round of rooms.

The Right Ambiance
Bright counters make preparing dinner simpler, while softer dining and living areas feel welcoming when guests arrive. Each room gets levels suited to how you actually use it.

Gentler Nights
A soft path through hallways and stairs makes late-night trips easier without flooding the house with overhead light. The next morning, controls are right where you need them.
Choosing the Right Lutron Platform
Not every home needs the same level of automation. A few upgraded rooms, an established residence and a major new construction project each call for a different approach. Total Home helps homeowners choose the Lutron platform that best fits their property, existing infrastructure and plans for the future.
For kitchens, family rooms or everyday spaces, Caséta adds smooth dimming, convenient schedules and intuitive app access without turning a modest upgrade into a major project.
RadioRA 3 suits finished homes that need coordinated rooms without opening walls. Wireless keypads and professional programming make scenes and schedules easy across the home.
HOMEWORKS
HomeWorks is designed for major renovations and new residences, where custom keypads, thoughtfully planned wiring and advanced fixture choices become part of the architecture.
More Than a Switch on the Wall
A well-planned project should feel uncomplicated once you live with it. That means deciding where controls belong, how each space changes throughout the day, which LEDs can dim reliably and how the rest of the house should respond. Those choices work together, whether we're improving a few finished rooms or planning an entire new residence.

Scenes & Engraved Keypads
A well-marked keypad should make sense the first time a guest presses it. Instead of lining a wall with switches for every circuit, a few clearly named buttons can prepare the kitchen for cooking, the dining area for company or the family room for a movie. Each label describes what will happen, not which circuit is hidden behind the wall.
Engraving, button placement, preferred levels and everyday overrides are considered before programming begins. If routines change later, the settings can be revised without making the wall controls more complicated.
✓ Clearly labeled buttons for familiar activities
✓ Several circuits grouped into useful presets
✓ Convenient locations at entrances and bedside
✓ Changes to programming as routines evolve
Schedules That Follow Your Day
Mornings and evenings rarely call for the same atmosphere. A kitchen may need a bright start while a hallway needs only a gentle glow after bedtime. Thoughtful schedules can make those transitions happen naturally, reducing the number of adjustments everyone makes during a busy day.
We can coordinate sunset-based events with selected entrances, establish quiet overnight pathways and leave manual adjustments straightforward. Where the selected LEDs support tunable white, color temperature can change through the day. Seasonal timing also adapts as sunset shifts, without requiring someone to reset a timer every few weeks.
✓ Morning, evening and bedtime presets
✓ Sunset-based timing that follows the seasons
✓ Gentle levels for late-night movement
✓ Easy manual overrides when plans change

LEDs & Dimmers That Work Together
Few things make an expensive renovation feel unfinished faster than pendants that flicker or downlights that jump abruptly from bright to dark. The cause is often a mismatch between a bulb, its driver and the dimming hardware. Replacing everything isn't necessarily the answer, but guessing at compatibility can create more frustration.
We test performance at the levels the family actually uses, including quiet evening settings. Where a particular product cannot achieve the desired result, we explain the limitation and identify a practical alternative.
✓ Fixture and dimmer compatibility reviewed
✓ Flicker, buzzing and abrupt shutoff diagnosed
✓ Low-level performance tested in the room
✓ Working equipment retained where practical
Shades on the Same Keypad
On a sunny afternoon, lowering a shade can address glare more effectively than changing the brightness overhead. An evening preset might bring the window coverings down while setting a comfortable mood indoors. Coordinating those actions makes a familiar button more useful, particularly in rooms with large areas of glass.
We also make sure an automatic schedule can be overridden easily. Fabric, mounting and motor selection receive their own evaluation; this part of the project focuses on how the finished room behaves.
✓ Combined presets for shades and dimmers
✓ Comfortable settings during direct afternoon sun
✓ Privacy choices suited to evening routines
✓ Manual operation whenever the schedule changes

Outdoor Zones & Evening Routines
The entry steps, patio and garden each have a different job after sunset. Paths need clear footing, a terrace should feel comfortable for conversation and architectural details benefit from restraint. Organizing exterior areas into separate zones keeps the property useful and inviting rather than washing every surface in the same brightness.
Sunset-based schedules can adapt to seasonal changes, while homeowners remain free to adjust the setting for guests or late arrivals. Beam placement and product selection belong in the dedicated landscape design; here the priority is making those choices work as a whole.
✓ Distinct settings for entries, paths and patios
✓ Seasonal on-and-off schedules
✓ Flexible adjustments for hosting and late arrivals
✓ Coordination with compatible outdoor fixtures
Connected to Control4 or Savant
When a house already uses Control4 or Savant, there may be no reason to introduce a separate daily interface. Compatible scenes can appear on familiar touchscreens or mobile controls, and one action can help prepare several spaces for entertaining or winding down. The objective is consistency for the household, not more menus to navigate.
Integration depends on the platform, software versions and installed hardware. We review what's already there, decide which functions make sense to share and test those connections before presenting them as part of the finished experience.
✓ Familiar touchscreens and mobile controls
✓ Coordinated activities where devices permit
✓ Compatibility reviewed before programming
✓ Straightforward use for family members and guests

How a Lighting Project Comes Together
Every project begins with understanding the rooms and the people who use them. From the first walkthrough to the final adjustments, our approach brings together thoughtful planning, careful programming and ongoing support.

Discovery
We walk through each room with you, check existing switches and fixtures, and learn where the current setup falls short. We note what should change and what can stay in place.

Design
We map the keypads, scenes and schedules that suit each space. You will understand how your selected Lutron platform fits your wiring, shades and plans before any work begins.

Installation
Working with your electrician as needed, we fit and program the dimmers and keypads, then test each scene and fine-tune the levels in the rooms where you'll actually use them.

Support
After setup, our 24/7 Help Desk offers assistance by phone. If a dimmer, keypad or scene needs more attention, customers with service plans receive priority onsite scheduling.

Smart Lighting Questions
Do I have to rewire the house?
Usually not. Wireless dimmers and keypads fit the existing wall boxes. New wiring mainly comes into play with whole-property platforms planned during construction or a gut renovation.
Will the lights still work if the internet goes down?
Yes. Lutron keypads and dimmers talk to each other on their own wireless link, so wall controls and schedules keep working. Only remote control from outside the house needs the internet.
Can I control the lights when I am away?
Yes. The Lutron app, or a Control4 or Savant app, can check and change lights from anywhere with an internet connection.
Can we start with one floor and add more later?
Often, yes. The platform is chosen with growth in mind, so a main floor done now can be joined by bedrooms or the lower level in a later phase.
Can keypad buttons be changed later?
Yes. Buttons can be reprogrammed as routines change, and new engraving can be ordered so the labels match.
Can you take over lighting another company installed?
Yes. Existing processors, keypads and dimmers are reviewed first, and equipment that still works is kept and reprogrammed rather than replaced.
