4 Things to Consider When Looking for a Home Automation Company

So, you’re ready to get started with smart home automation. But how do you decide what company to work with? If you’ve searched ‘smart home companies’ in your city or town, a few results might show up online. But how do you know which business is best? You can look at online reviews, but it’s always tough to tell whose word to trust.

We’re a technology integrator based in the Red Bank, NJ area, but we aren’t here to boast about our great team (although they are pretty great!). Our founder Keith recently shared a video explaining what to look for in a smart home integrator. If you’re just starting your automation journey, look out for these attributes below!

1. Do They Have a Showroom?

The best smart home integrators have a showroom that allows visitors to try out the technology for themselves. If a company doesn’t have a showroom, that means you won’t be able to test and experience automation before the installation. That’s no good! How will you know what features to include in your home system? We recommend moving on and finding a business with an interactive showroom.

2. Is the Staff There to Help You?

Before hiring a company, meet the staff and assess if there is someone in the office to answer your calls. If anything ever goes wrong with your smart home system, you want to work with a firm that is always there for you. And do they have techs in-house that support their clients? Some companies outsource their technicians, and while there are talented techs at outsourcing companies, there is no way an outsourcing firm can know your home and needs well enough.

3. Do They Have a Security Protocol?

The company you work with will have access to your house’s equipment security and network security. Find out what the company’s policy is on managing security. Do they have the ability to remove an ex-employee from your database? What is their security white paper or best practices? If they’re only using Dropbox, that’s an issue. There should be a document outlining their security practices, and if not, find another company.

4. How Long Have They Been in Business?

Small companies often close, while medium and larger-sized companies are sold and merged. How can you ensure the business you work with will be around for a long time? Find out how many years they have been in business. Companies that have been around for many years are more likely to stay. They know how to navigate the highs and lows of business and adapt.

A smart home company is not a one-time service that you never use again. Instead, think of it like your doctor or dentist. When you have an ongoing relationship with your integrator, they’ll know your house and system’s needs. They’ll be able to make upgrades and repairs as technology evolves over the years, and you’ll always have someone to call for assistance.
